  • Centuries will pass before another voice of his calibre, elocution and style will be gifted to this planet again. No body could ever reach to his heights. He had complete control in all sorts of variations in singing. Lata Mangeshkar in an interview once said that " Mehdi Hassan kay galay mein shree bhaghwan boltein hain" I think one can not express more than Lata Mangeshkar. This was the first Ghazal which made Mehdi Hassan an immortal singer. May God bless him with health. (27th July 2011)

  • Part VI

So, towards 1965, Mahdi Hasan sang some ghazals and poems by Faiz Sahib as well as by Ahmed Fraz (e.g. Ranjish Hi Sahi, or Abb kay hem bichday tau shayed kabhi khawabon mein milein)

1965 was the year when creative people got the opportinuty to express their talent. This was the year when Mahdi Hasan sang Faiz and Fraz making them known to ordinary people. And perhaps this was the year when Mehdi Hasan found his EXPRESSION IN THE POETRY OF FAIZ AND FRAZ.

    Thanks.

  • Part V

I forgot to mention that as the Deputy Commissionner of Montgomery (Sahiwal), Mustafa Zaidi organised an eveing with Faiz Sahib.

This was practically the first time, Faiz Sahib was accepted and honoured by goverment functionaries. (Mustafa Zaidi seems to have mentioned this as one of the greatest DEEDs of his life. CHEERS !). The publicity of that Evening projected Faiz's poetry to ordinary people (including myself who was at school at that time).

The most valuable support of Peoples Republic of China during that war, at least partly, changed the perception of progressive people, and restrained the anti-creative, anti-intellectual tendencies n the Establishment and in the media controlled by them.

So, in 1965, Radio Pakistan started broadcasting ghazals by Faiz Sahib. Medhi Hasan sang Faiz Sahib, making him accessile to people.

  • Part III

In 1965 war, Peoples Republic of China gave crucial support to Pakistan. In that war, most leftist poets and intellectuals showed their patriotism through their poetry. Examples: Habib Jalib used to sing "Zinda Baad, Aiy Cheen o Indonesia, Tum say, paiy'inda hay amn e Asia". A great progressive journalist, Safdar Meer (alias "Zeno") wrote a peem ":Ali Haider, Ali Haider" that he recited from one street to another in Lahore.

  • Part II

In the political set up of those times, these progressive people were "untouchables". Some of the poetry of Faiz Sahib was sung in films e.g. "Nisar Mein Teri Galiyon Pay".

Towards 1964 , Syed Mustafa Zaidi (also known as Tegh Alabadi in his earlier days as a poet), a "CSP officer", became the Deputy Commissioner of "Montegomery", now known as Sahiwal.

A respected poet, MAJID AMJAD, lived in that city. So, he and Mustafa Zaidi knew Faiz Sahib.

  • 1. This is the role a character actor and not of a film "hero" . So it gives credence to the idea that is Ala Uddin (The Great).

A poet, Mustafa Zaidi wrote ":

HAAn, hay agar, hay tau ko'iy, mahram e asrar, sunay !

(If some one can share the trust of "secrets" (i.e. hidden meaning) he may like to listen (what is it about) :

FAIZ Ahmed Faiz was an enlighten, humane, and ideological person. He was in jail more than once, and spent a total of 4-5 years in jail.
