Great old documentary series narrated by Walter Cronkite. This is part 1 of the story of the history of the battlewagon and its demise.

  • So very true about the Michigan. Her general layout was a generation ahead of Dreadnought. Her armour arrangement too it could be argued was superior to the British ship as the American system was later proven so in action during both wars. These ship and was the start of a more radical diversion of American and British capital ship design than previously seen.

  • Just think; if the USS Michigan had been launched 1st ahead of the Dreadnought than all big battle ships would have been called "Michigans". The Michigan was in fact the true prototype of the modern battleship, heavily armored, long ranged and with her 8-12in guns in super-firing turrets mounted on the center-line, she had a speed of just one knot slower then the HMS Dreadnought.

  • Even 19 1000lb bombs weren't able to sink Yamato's sister ship, Musashi. That was accomplished by 20 torpedoes and she still sailed on for another 5 hours before she finally sank!

With adequate AAA and air cover, such as the Iowas had, a well designed WW2 battleship is extremely difficult to sink by air attack.

  • R.I.P Ostfriesland :(

  • Rawr! Blasphemy! hehe narrator made it sound as though the Battle of Jutland for the British was a cake walk despite losing dramatically more lives than the Germans did. It was a tactical victory for the Germans but a Strategic failure for them as well, they inflicted the most damage but still did not break the back of the British.

  • told you i was gonna wear it out!!! excellent video!! another 5
