Petitions containing nearly 10,000 signatures of faculty, students, and staff from 19 of Washington State's community and technical colleges were delivered to the House Speaker's office on Tuesday, April 21. While the petitions were delivered, Rep. Lynn Kessler (D-24) stepped out of her office to talk about why they are making budget cuts and increasing tuition (hear her conversation).
The petitions ask the governor and State Legislature to stop the budget cuts to higher education and to keep tuitions affordable for working-class students. Twenty percent of students who attend the two-year colleges are unemployed, 31 percent are parents, and 51 percent work part- or full-time.
