Basically the true meaning of this is that fancy food and a fancy restaurant never beats a simple meal on top of a beautiful mountain surrounded by millions of extravagant stars

I couldn't agree with dharmayatra more! I read someone say that REI made the "choice to portray the backcountry as it is frequently experienced by most of us: cold, wet, often dreary, disappointing and downright uncomfortable" This isn't what the ads are about at all. It's that absolutely incredible feeling of accomplishment, peace and personal nirvana that is impossible to explain to someone who hasn't experienced it! I love these ads! They make me want to get on a mountain not avoid it!

Talking with your mouth full is so hip and edgy :-)
-
and why are they breathing so heavy

As we say frequently - Even a bad day on the mountain is better than a good day at the office.

Love the campaign. The music gets cut off too abruptly at the end though.
Why is that women so aggressive with putting on the peanut butter? She rips the bread in half near the end...

A coworker asked me if eating PB on top of a cold mountain would really entice people to come to REI for that kind of adventure.
This ad resonates with people who have done this, we know what the actors are experiencing and it's not "it's a cold night and all i have left to eat is PB and bread". It's, "I'm having a peak moment right now and the simplicity of this moment really frazzles my brain, cuz I'm not really doing anything over-the-top.. but I feel better than I've felt in a long time."
