There is no "circulating magnetic field" you are just partially magnetizing the iron, in the same way you can magnetize a nail by rubbing it one way on a magnet. Using a thick core allows the relatively tiny magnetic field to support a considerable amount of weight. It will not reconnect after they are taken apart because that disrupts the delicate field and scrambles the magnetic domains.
