@ASCBLUEYE Sorry to here about the miss. I would stick with the 06 since it works. But if you are like me and don't like to "quit on a gun" I wouldn't give up on the 280, especially since it is a good round! Maybe try different brass or have a good gunsmith look at it. I have found that an objective opion really helps when it come to guns. Take care.

@monsterman27 I have a Ruger 77 Hawkeye in 300 Win Mag and get 1/2" groups at 100 yards using 180 gr Accubonds and 3/4" groups at 100 yards using Nosler Partitions using 74.5 and 75.5 grains of RL 22. The only thing I have done to the rifle is had the trigger adjusted to 3.5 lbs. Of I have also determined to best OAL for each of these bullets. I also have a friend who has a 7MM mag the gets 3/4" groups at 100 yds using 160 gr partition in the same make of rifle.

Im not realy a REM fan but if saw a used one for a deal never now might own one. I like Sako, Brownig on th high end and would even choose a win model 70 over a rem by choice. Ruger has a new rifle out with a 3 lug bolt thats go my attention called a ruger american rifle. Id get it bfore hawkeye but thinkthe hawkeye is beautifull gun. Im prettyimpressed with my 30-06 model 116 savage/buris black diamond scope for acuracy. Sweet shooter.Next on wishlist maybe 300wsm

@ASCBLUEYE Not to brag, Ive guided for elk, muley, bear, and AK sheep, griz, moose, caribou, goats, etc.... I WILL NOT take a long shot, if i can get closer... just the way I hunt. The master guide I worked under in AK, told me. If it wasnt for pissy grouchy bears, he would only use a 243, as it kill's everything it hits. I will agree with him, Ive used one alot...it kill's.. period! BUT, it only takes ONE bad time dealing with a grizzly, and you better,,stop him NOW. So I use a 300 win mag.
So, which rifle did you use? I see this was posted in Sept. 2011. I would have picked the 30-06 since I like .30 caliber bullets for mature bull elk. Just my opinion.

@nmelkhunter1 I used the ruger 280, missed a shot on a small running 6x6 330yards away and couldn't get another round fed fast enough to get him as the mauser action hung up on extraction, pretty disappointing/infuriating, using the rem 700s from now on, if i would of had the 06 or the 338 i would of had a nice young 6x6. live and learn. my uncle killed a small 5x5 that trip and the vid is on my channel. thanks for watching and the comments, 06 is an awesome round despite the haters:)

what groups you gt with ruger? Most ive seen dont do as good for accuracy
monsterman27 3 weeks ago
@monsterman27 the best it will do is 1.5 moa with full power hunting loads, if I back off the powder and slow it down and use a boat tail gameking or matchking maybe an inch, and that is with bedding, free float and a timney trigger. It is not on par with the remingtons out of the box accuracy at all, but it is good enough to kill game out to 300yds

300 RUM ..barnes-x 180gr.......next question?
smelzodeath 1 month ago
@smelzodeath 338-06 with 180s is right on the heels of the RUM, with 25 grains less powder. I know its an awesome round, I used to have a Sako 75 Classic, red recoil pad and claro walnut stock in 300rum, but it seemed like the elk and deer i shot with it died just as good as with an 06 with less meat damage and recoil. Thanks for the response.
