After seeing a ton of videos on how to play Angeles by Elliott Smith (I've been trying to learn it myself) I noticed many people complaining about not having a good instruction on how to properly pick the strings. This is simply a video slowing down the basic fingerpicking pattern that I hear for the first couple of chords... played much faster of course. Keep in mind that this pattern is not continuous throughout the song, you'll have to listen for the variations. I hope this helps other beginners like myself!

The correct first chord is 1st - 2nd fret, 2nd - 3rd fret, 4th - 4th fret, and an open 6th string....... CAPO 5TH!!!!!!!!

  • FINALLY posted a more comprehensive semi-tutorial showing the finger pattern! I hope everyone enjoys it!

  • When the heck am I going to create a follow up vid?????????

  • I sure will... I've certainly picked up the speed and paid closer attention to the picking patterns and the variations on chord changes. I'll post another as soon as I can now that someone asked :)

  • That last note played in the pattern should be an open high e string, for the melody to transition into the next chord.

Good video though! I'm sure it'll help out others.

  • @PullHairRubEye You're right! I've written down the picking for most of the chords for the intro... I just haven't sat down to write the chords out once he reaches the F#m(?) shape. I'll be posting a more comprehensive video soon!
