Stunning! There are no better versions on you tube or anywhere else for that matter.

Thank you, Charlotte, for bringing me to bringing me to Oda Slobodskaya. What an wonderful, elegant voice it is.
I loved the music when I first heard Lucia Popp's rendition. Even more so when I began to understand what the beautiful sounding Russian words meant - and what the emotional journey was about.
A classic!

Superba tecnica e vocalità. Un quid in più delle altre grandi è il gusto della sfumatura sonora che la pone come immensa interprete. Grazie Charlotte, Buon Anno !!

Unbelievable. :)

I thought Vishnevskaya was great, but this is pure poetry to my ears. I am a native Russian speaker and have read the book - this is beyond description! Thank you for keeping this beautiful piece of art alive!!

Thank you so much, Charlotte, for keeping this stunning voice alive! I have never heard her until this recording...what lovely diction and stunning tone. I'm wanting more and more.

Wonderful singer! Great vocal beauty, expressiveness, powerful and impressive.
As I was reading about her Letter Scene in Drummond's Speaking of Diaghilev, I hoped I might find her on YouTube, and here she is!
Thank you so much.
Thank you for the comments. She truly was a very great singer & gave marvellously entertaining lecture recitals until her final year. I have posted everything from her principal LP plus Peter & the Wolf & Medtner. There is s little more to come.

The recording was made in the late 1940s released 1962. I don't know Vishnevskaya's version well. She is a fine singer but I feel Slobodskaya is even greater, equally passionate but vocally more refined with more variety and subtlety. I am so glad you enjoy listening to her; she was in danger of being forgotten, but now YouTube can keep her wonderful artistry alive

I am so glad you enjoyed the LP and only sorry it has some scratches. I have tried unsuccessfully so far to get Decca to re-release it. Yes, it really is the best, a wonderful interpretation, so alive and genuine. She liked the voice to have a"focussed tone" and not to sing too heavily, as many tend to do in this role. After all Tatiana is very young in Act One.
