Sounds like your lens has a defective main bd.

it is now happening with the kit lens i got with the camera and not the lens you ahve as i have it and it works perfectly with it so cont buy a new lens yet

it's the diaphragma the lens it self is broken ... no camera problems .. got the same problem ... 3 times !! eventually changed it for a sigma 18-200 , and after aprox 25.000 klicks it's stil working !!!

the lens itself is bad... not the camera, or mount...

Try to cleaning the golden point on tne lens and camera.ERR1 meaning "touch err"

the quantaray lens needs to be rechip to be used on current DSLRs. The fact that it only shoots at maximum aperture suggest a rechip. I know this because I had the same lens.

anyone having really crap sharpness? on the 40d?

sorry for the late reply...but...the 40d seems to have some pertty good sharpness and quality...and an extra tip kinda relating to the sharpness...i would suggest not to print a picture taken with the 40d any larger than a 16x20....if u r looking for a dslr and price dosnt matter maybe try goin for the 50d and get an extra 5mp up from the 10mp 40d
