the whole point of the PFT is to ensure that soldiers at at a minimum combat effectiveness. meaning , te army wants to make sure that if ever a soldier got lazy (which is unforgivable), they were at least ready to perform at a certain standard. when i was in Junior ROTC i had an instructor who was near her 50's, she was portly and starting to show the signs of aging, but every time we did PT, she made the cadets look like idiots. she attributed this to years of running about 6-8 miles

@haz697 Incorrect, we easily did 5 to 6 miles runs every mon, wed and fri at a 7 min mile pace. That was an average bravo group run. Alpha did 7+ miles at a 6 min mile pace and sometimes with IBA (body armor). And btw, your royal navy pt run is 1.5 mile, half what the US Marines pt test run is and 1/2 mile less than army standards. The time difference can obviously be attributed to this shorter run.

0:25 is he related to chuck norris?
@haz697 yah actually in the army we run 2 miles for our pft, not 1.5 mile like you say the british do. hence why we have 5 more minutes on our time. get your "facts" straight

Remember most combat arms MOS go to OSUT not BASIC. BASIC is for REMF's. REMF's might train on weapons once in BASIC and then never really mess with them again till in a war. Combat arms soldiers will train all the time on weapons as weapons is their main job. I think this is a good idea. It will give more time on weapons to people who this might be the only training they ever get on them.
