Don't Say That. [Jemi One-shot]

Demi felt her knees get weak as the words escaped Joe's lips. Her heart fell apart as her best friend said the words, "I'm in love." Demi has been Joe's best friend since they were in diapers. Once they hit Jr. High, Demi got these different feelings for Joe. She became jealous of every girl he talked to, wishing it was her that Joe flirted with. But she held it in for so many years, and it was the only secret between Joe and Demi.
Joe's grin slowly disappeared when Demi didn't respond, just stood there starring at Joe like he did something wrong. "What's wrong?" He asked.
Demi took a step back and shook her head. Demi has seen Joe in love before, with Chelsea, with Camilla, and now with Taylor. But she was tired of him coming to her when his heart got broken. Couldn't he see what real love is?
"I'm sorry," She mumbled, trying not to cry in front of him. "I have to go." She said then sprinted toward her house.
Joe watched her run away. Before she had ran off he noticed a tear that rolled down her cheek. Was she crying because of him? He started to run after her, into her back yard and on the dock. "Demi!" He shouted.
Demi ignored Joe's call and leaned against rail of the wooden dock. She sighed scanning the water. It looked like it would go on forever, but she knew there was still land somewhere on the other side.
"Demi," a deep voice said behind her. A soft hand gripped her shoulder and turned her around. Demi looked into Joe's eyes and sighed. Why was she doing this to herself?
"What's wrong?" He asked. Demi didn't say anything.
"Tell me. Please." He told her.
Again, Demi didn't say anything.
Joe sighed frustrated and tightened his grip on her shoulder, "Tell me what's wrong."
Demi looked away, "You're blind," she told him, whacking his hand off her shoulder.
"Blind? What do you mean?" He asked.
Demi shook her head, "I like you. Can you not see it?! Yet you come to me telling me how you're in love with another girl! I don't want to hang around you and keep the feeling I feel locked inside." Dem was in tears by this time. She couldn't believe those words, that desperation escaped her mouth.
Joe didn't say anything. He starred at her, not knowing what to say. He's loved Demi forever, just as a sister. I guess he's had actual feelings for Demi here and there, but he'd always ignored them.
Demi scoffed and looked down a little grin on her face. She finally knew the truth, and she was happy she did. It faded quick though and she bit her tongue, holding back new tears. "Thanks for letting me know."
Demi started to take off her shirt and pants, revealing a bathing suit she always had on these hot days. She took one more look at Joe and rolled her eyes. She jumped into the lake making a big splash.
Joe looked into the water, still stunned Demi liked him. He waited a couple of minutes, but after 2, Demi still wasn't up. He started getting worried and pulled off his t-shirt, ready to jump in.
"Demi!" He called. No response.
Joe jumped into the lake exactly where Demi jumped. He started swimming underwater, but he couldn't see anything. He felt around, just sand. He ran out of breath and swam to the top.
Joe took a breath and then went down again, in a different spot. He felt around on the bottom, still nothing but sand. He ran out of breath and again and swam to the top.
"DEMI!" Joe yelled again. Still no response. Joe threw his head back and screamed. Just then thunder rumbled out of the sky. Tears started coming out of Joe's eyes, as he realized he loved Demi, not as a sister, but as she is. She was beautiful in his eyes, he didn't know why he pushed his feelings aside for him. "Demi, I need you."
"Took you long enough," a whisper came from behind him.
Joe whipped around, revealing Demi under the dock. Joe sighed of relief and swam furiously over to Demi. "Why'd you do that?" He asked, able to reach the bottom now.
"I wanted to see if you'd come after me." She mumbled.
Joe embraced her in a hug and he sobbed on her head, "Don't do that ever again. You had me scared to death." He whispered into her head.
"I'm sorry," She apologized.
Joe pulled away, "I am to."
"So, I guess we can't be together," Demi mumbled, looking down.
Suddenly Joe crashed his lips onto Demi's. He tasted the strawberry lip gloss that didn't come off when she dove in. He placed his hands on her hips scooting her closer to him. He pulled away, placed his forehead on hers, "Don't say that."
