There was an exhibition of a photographer who had extensively documented shaman activities throughout Asia. It was a retrospective following his death, and to pay homage as well to spice up the show, they held several gut (goo'd). These were more entertaining than spupernatural, however the basic concept is the MUDANG (priest) is hired be a family who is in need of help. Korean's traditionally believe that if their ancestors are happy, the family will prosper and if their ancestors are not happy, the family will suffer misfortune. This is where the mudang come in. To play the part of spiritual councelor and quell the distraught family. Typically, from what I've gathered, the mudang will become possessed by one of several spirits, sometimes they become the earthly dwelling of the deceased to inhabbit and express to the family through a series of gestures and wailings that the dead are sorry and that it's ok and everyone cries and hugs. Or the mudang will become possessed by one of the gods, like saints in santorini, and deal with the other world problems. There's always lots of money involved and whirling and calling and drinking traditional rice alcohol. Some believe, many are scared to death to come into any contact with it and others completely dismiss it as fluff. believe it or not--- ^.~

  • what is she holding? what symbols that ?

  • She's holding pom-poms made from strips of paper. Then she picks up two tree branches (might have been bamboo) also with tethers of white paper. I don't know what they symbolize though... I'll try to hunt down an answer.
