I saw Ralph in Baltimore a few weeks ago promoting his new book, and he mentioned this encounter (this exact one, i don't know). He told Al something like "you've been liberated!, how does it feel to be liberated?"

All Gore had to do was run with Nader's 2000 platform and he blows Bush off the map since the public opinion polls show they agree with Nader on almost everything.
But no, he fucks up and runs with much of the Bush agenda. They had so many similarities in policies, which the public doesn't follow tending to focus more on personality, that you sometimes couldn't tell them apart---as Gore pointed out in one of the debates.
