One of my fondest memories growing up in San Carlos, California is of the Christmas Eve service at our stucco church. We arrived at 11:00pm to miraculous luminarias that stood guard around the top of the unfinished, flat-topped building and lined the stairs and benches of the patio. (It looked like a medieval fort!) Each of these blazing sentinels was nothing but a paper lunch bag with sand and a candle. We would sing carols outside as we exited the service at midnight, each carrying a candle.
