Bristol Bay, Alaska, is the last great stronghold of Pacific salmon on the planet. It is remote wilderness and is home to a thriving ecosystem where grizzlies roam the banks, bald eagles rule the skies, and leopard rainbows swim in crystal clear water. It is the pinnacle of North American angling.

Unfortunately, this fabled region is now threatened by the proposed Pebble Mine. If permitted, this giant would become the largest open pit mine in the history of North America. Pebble is planned to sit at the headwaters of the Nushagak and Kvichak Rivers, respectively, home to the largest King and Sockeye runs on earth. A great controversy is now before us because open pit mining has a long history of polluting water. One of the world's greatest fisheries is now at risk of being lost forever.

The Support

Sport, commercial, and subsistence fishermen across the globe have banded together to oppose Pebble Mine. In addition, numerous conservation groups, fly fishing companies, and legal teams are working around the clock to enact legislation to stop the mine. Largely because of these efforts, a clean-water initiative has made the Alaskan State ballot. For the first time Alaskans will have the opportunity to vote on the issue. While the vote will be limited to Alaskans, the legislative process is not. There is much the rest of the United States and global community can do to influence what happens in the August 2008 primary election.

The Call to Action

Ultimately, this issue comes down to "dollars and sense." The mine has launched a multi-million-dollar advertising campaign professing the great benefits of Pebble's mineral deposits for the global economy. With deep pockets they will undoubtedly generate persuasive propaganda in attempts to sway Alaskan voters.
