A trip through southern and central Bulgaria, across the Rila, Pirin and Rodopi mountains, in June 2009. It inlcuded the Rila Monastery, the largest and most impressive monastery in Bulgaria, Bansko - a traditional village next to an international ski resort, and Plovdiv. Historic Plovdiv, which has many Roman-period monuments, is the second largest city in Bulgaria. it extends over several hills, and is has a large area built in Bulgarian Revival style in the 19th century.
