"What a good education should do is give the student a sense that they belong to an intellectual conversation that's bigger than themselves"

Nick Mount teaches English at the University of Toronto. He is the author of "When Canadian Literature Moved to New York" an account of mass migration of Canadian writers to the US at the end of 19th century. He teaches a very popular first year English course "Literature for our time". He was one of the 10 finalists of the 2006 TVO's Best Lecturer Competition. (Recorded on June 15, 2007)

  • Best professor in existence.

  • I've definitely felt like I was part of intellectual conversations that were bigger than me, and I must say it is an indescribable feeling. I am one of few, unfortunately. Many students focus solely on getting the high grades and express disdain for the educational process, calling it too competitive. I feel like that is missing the point. To be in a room where your ideas flow back and forth between yourself and a professor is a great intellectual experience. ALMOST makes it worth the money.

  • @lmlyon Check him out on TVO Bid Ideas on line. See post below this one.

  • @isoarcars TVO bid ideas is a great place for a free education. I also like Robert Adam's lecture on The White Tiger, Jordan Peterson, Malcolm Gladwell, Mark Kingsley and Gabor Mate. Enjoy. Go to his lectures in person if you can though. I do and it's definitely worth the one hour trip.

  • @isoarcars You can hear many of his lectures online. They are shorter versions and so not quite as amazing as in person, but still great. Google "TVO Big Ideas"

Search for Nick Mount or any of the following lectures he's done there (in order of greatness in my opinion): Waiting for Godot, Lolita, Ariel, The Wasteland, To the Lighthouse. Also go to Nick Mount Eng 140 website to see what music he plays in class for these lectures (the soundtrack). I find great new music there like Ani Difranco.

  • Amazing prof! extremely competent and informative and his jokes are the best... he feel like one of us whereas many prof feel distant.... great man!

  • His lecture on T. S. Eliot's "The Wasteland" was wonderful. I felt a connection and understanding of the time and the poem. I wish UT would put his classes on line.

  • I had him as my prof last year, he is amazing
