Indian Style. It is safe to give your baby a bath before the umbilical cord stump falls off and the area heals, if you want to. Experts recommend waiting until your baby's body temperature has stabilised after birth before giving a bath; if possible, wait until at least six hours after the birth and preferably longer. You may find it simpler to stick to topping and tailing with a clean lukewarm facecloth for the first week or so, this is also called a sponge bath and the face and genital areas are given more attention.

Either way, newborn babies don't need a daily bath. Washing off any obvious dirt is enough to keep them clean and there is no clear evidence to support the benefits of daily bathing. Babies just don't get that dirty until they start crawling around, and cleansers, and even tap water, have been shown to damage the developing newborn skin.

Experts suggest alternating baths using a mild soap or pH neutral cleanser with water-only baths. Don't fill the baby bath too much -- about five inches of warm water is all you need. Be guided by your baby. Some babies love their bath and enjoy the water, others scream throughout. If your baby hates it, simply cut bath times down to the minimum for a few weeks.
