  • Good on you for taking up CW. It takes regular study. The thing that helped me the most is CW Player which is free software. It has a quiz feature and you can select the letters you want to drill on plus not only the speed but the length of space before the next character is sent. You have to type the letter you think or know was sent and it lets you know if it is correct.

I wish you the best of luck and if you end up on air, I would be proud to have a QSO with you. 73 Rem K6BBQ

  • Hi Andrew. Congrats on learning CW. It's alive and well on all bands. Try downloading two free programs- Morse Runner and G4FON Koch Method CW Trainer. Both are free and great training aids (just Google them). When you're ready, I'd be thrilled to set up a sked and be your first CW QSO. I've been licensed since 1964. CW has always been a challenge for me, but I do enjoy it very much. Plus, we need you to get CW proficient for SOTA work- HI. 73, Marc W4MPS

  • i really like ham university. its a piece of software..you can get a demo for free. i bought it cause i thought it was better then any other options out there. all the free software really kinda was low quality.

  • Andrew - congrats on the desk! I think you clearly deserve the upgrade and it must be nice to saddle up to that dark wood and work on the radios, CW and the computers. I am glad you survived Irene. Looking forward to your CW adventures!

  • Great that you are getting into code. Your signal travels REALLY far with it. I would highly recommend ditching even that notepad and grabbing a piece of software called 'just learn morse code' It uses the Koch method, and you progress one letter at a time at the WPM you want to actually be proficient at. Just set it to 20wpm, that way you actually 'hear' each letter as a whole unit, and are not counting the dits/dahs. Let me know if you want help practicing, i'm in Stamford, CT. 73 NU3F

  • BTW, this is one site that has wide acclaim and I have played around with it. The address is lcwoDOTnet

  • VEry sharp desk. And yes, you should have a nice place in your Man Cave to sit everything. I am in the same spot with CW. It is not easy. A very gretat friend and Elmer, Ralph Collins, just passed away last month. Before his passing, he sent me his straight key and IAMBIC Paddle. Tore me aprt. So I called him and in ou=r last phone call I promised him I would learn CW. I have GOT to get it down. Also would like to hear of any sites that have worked for others to learn CW.
