  • What an accidental find this was. Cindy Cariel and her brother took me surfing for the first time at Talafofo Bay. It sure brought back some memories. My first board was a Royal Hawaiian just like the yellow one @2:02 minutes but mine was turquoise.

Is that Butch on a skateboard @ 2:20 at Apra Heights?

I made a couple of skateboards a NAVSTA hobby shop also. I lived in North Tipalao, but went to school at St. Francis with the Cariel's and others.

    Thanks for the memories.

  • Butch is wearing his shades a little later in the clip, with the quonset hut post office behind him.

Butch took many of the pictures, as did Mike Caracol and Mort.

Thank you for letting it bring back good memories.

  • very very cool miss those days...don't we all

miss Guam all the time sad that Jerry and Dan Oberhiem have passed Jerry was my best friend

    Steve Williams

  • The music sounds so much like what we heard at that time, Quiet Village, Wheels. John R. Borja "gets it".

Oberhiems were good guys, they and the Rowes had a wonderful film of Ritidian Point surfing.

I was making a skateboard for Kenny Rowe while Dan was making a surfboard at NAVSTA hobby shop around the time most of these pics were taken. Kenny passed away recently, too.

  • Do you think Talofofo bay will ever be restored to it's original condition? Even on small days there were some fun ridable waves. Nowadays we all we have are swells that take you nowhere on that bay. It was back in 1997 during Typhoon Paka that changed the structure forever.

  • 99% per cent of change happens in 1% of the time, especially in terms of sand coming down the river.

Here in Virginia we never know what to expect after big storms, either.

  • I was good friends with Kenny Rowe back in the late 80s and early 90s. We were best friends and i lived with him then and he used to talk about his surfing days all the time. I was there when Jerry died and I helped Kenny through that time as it hit him hard. I moved back stateside and we lost touch. I was recently looking for him when I came across these posts and was shocked to read he has passed on - can anyone tell me anything about what happened to Kenny?

  • I too surfed for the first time at Talafofo Bay , Hobie long board, Mr. Medeiros ,Cindy and Charlene taught me how to surf. Kenny Crandall a neighbor never stopped amazing me with his intelligence, and Kenny Rowe Loved him then and Forever Summer Days I will always cherish and remember ....
