Sorry, but did you pay attention to the 12 Principles of Animation.

I wonder if you have been animating straight-ahead or pose-to-pose.

If you were animating pose-to-pose you will have more control of your animation in the blocking phase. Then you start moving your keys and then you can start finishing up the animation. I am trying to apply the 12 Principles of Animation and the pose-to-pose action techniques to one of the animations I am working on

i don't have any solid education in animation so what you see is what i've been working on by myself.

I recomend you to take a look at navone's website. he learned animation by himself, made the famous alien song video and he got hired at pixar. in his website you'll fine some tutorials, search in google for victor navone

I've spotted articles around the net and I have watched a lot of making ofs in the past. I haven't got any solid education either. Try searching the net a lot, you'll find awesome articles. One about the 12 Principles of Animations is located at CGSociety.
