It's Christmas ... all over Londontown, aka The ACT in Maple Ridge, December 13-17.
SPECC-tacular Productions (Ed Marshall, Artistic Director) and Emerald Pig Theatrical Society (Sharon Malone, Director) present a delightful musical adaptation of Charles Dickens' immortal classic of Ebenezer Scrooge. Set in Victorian London, Scrooge's journey from the darkness of his miserly life to the light of hope and humanity comes alive with almost 60 talented actors and dancers, many of whom are SD42 students and alumni.
Sharon Malone is the director and also works in the district as a school psychologist. Theatre is an opportunity to focus on the strengths that students have. The production is an inclusive mixture of students from throughout the district, as well as students from Meadowridge and some home schoolers, recent grads, young adults and the young at heart! A blend of abilities, personalities, shapes and sizes and ages makes this a true microcosm of our society.
Susan Mitchell, the director of the Maple Ridge Dance Circle, has worked with all of the actors, choreographing wonderful sequences that flow beautifully with the music and the story. In addition to working with many actors who have never danced before, Susan has also choreographed pieces for her dance students, turning them into skaters, sprites, phantoms and gravestones. Yes, gravestones!
Lea Jensen-Desjardins, who attends Thomas Haney Secondary and her sister Alexis, from Eric Langton, are both in the show. Their mother, Michele, appreciates the opportunity all the students have to participate in a production of this magnitude. "All our children love to watch, help with stage craft and perform in plays. The production of a play encourages the cast to listen to each other, to develop their communication skills and to continue to use their imaginations. They develop confidence through the entire process, the ability to empathize with and encourage others too. This year's production of A Christmas Carol, has also encouraged the family to re-read the classic by Charles Dickens and has lead to discussions about working and living conditions in his times as well as a comparison to modern day. Students learn the importance of commitment, responsibility and they have fun!"
Janelle McGuinness, another Thomas Haney student, echoes that sentiment. "It has been great meeting so many new and talented people who share a common interest in theatre and have outgoing and optimistic personalities which allow for the spread of Christmas spirit months before December has even arrived." Janelle has literally leaped into a number of roles in the production, including learning to dance in order to play the part of a chimney sweep!
This delightful musical adaptation of Dickens' classic novel rekindles the spirit of giving, celebrates the strength of family and renews our hope for a brighter future. It is a wonderful way for the whole family to celebrate the joys and warmth of the holidays. Tickets are just $20 or 4 for $65 and are available at the ACT Ticket Centre at 604-476-2787. A Christmas Carol runs from Dec. 13 to 16 at 7:30 each night and Dec. 17 at 12:00 noon and 6:00 pm.

"I really do appreciate all the volunteers that help make a production a success." ~ Michelle Jensen
