I don't know if it is the "best" song ever written, but the poetic line and allegory goes to a very special place: "September's coming soon, I'm pining for the moon...and what if there were two, locked in orbit around the fairest sun? That bright tight forever drum could not describe nightswimming..." What an astonishingly beautiful meaningful set of lines....How did he come up with that? I am glad he did....

I just found out this performance existed. It was beautiful. I love Chris Martin on the piano and R.E.M's music is everything to me. This so is heartbreaking in it's genius. They are the reason I have the strength (as small as it is) to make music today. Thank you for posting this.

@bourlivak88 come on, they are not average... over 50 million record sales, nearly doubling that of muse and radiohead..they are the kings of alternative rock

chris is way to cheerful and lovely(and fast) for this song. this performance did no good to an amazing song imo.

stipe is a ridiculously good song writer

@LowleyUK It likely inspired him to become a musician (since it has a similar sound to Coldplay's early music, in particular), so I doubt he's exaggerating.

@gurlsingerfan That's just his way of saying that REM is his favorite band :-)

chris cheapened it by declaring it the best song ever written, mike wouldve strugged to sing it after that id say.
we all know the best song ever written is wonderwall.

@PenneArbonara He says that about a lot of songs, anyway, it's a compliment!
