1960s era commercial depicts how Matty Mattel helps hus Uncle Matt stave off trail robbers with his realistic-looking Mattel Fanner .50 cap gun and cross-draw holster rig. Every cowboy kid in the 1950s and 60s wanted a Fanner .50!! The only thing better was a Shootin' Shell Fanner .50 which allowed the owner to load six spring-loaded "bullets" into the cylinder, which actually ejected a plastic tip when the hammer struck the cartridge and attached "Greenie Stick-em Cap."

And nowadays, if someone saw little Johnny with a play gun loaded with caps, the SWAT team would be called out, Johnny hauled off and placed into juvenile detention, and father taken in for interrogation. What has happened to this country in 45 years ?

I had a Fanner .50 as a kid. That was a quality piece of kid hardware.

I had several of these toy guns as a kid. I LOVED them. Also had a WInchester rifle that shot the same bullets. It had an automatic level to fire the bullets like The Rifleman. I'm pretty sure they stopped letting kids have any bullet projectiles after 1966. Now they're about $250 on ebay.

Some of my best days were spent sporting my twin Fanner 50's (yep, I had two of em) and wearing my older brothers Davy Crockett coonskin cap! Out the front door at daybreak and except for a quick bologna sandwich at noon, I wouldn't be back home till the porchlight came on...Good times!
