Autism is not a disease. And it is very possible thats the rise in the diagnosis rate of ASD is a result of broadening the definition, diagnostic substitution and increased surveillance.

And btw there's a TED lecture with Temple Gardin, named The world needs all kinds of minds, there she claims the world needs autistic people.

@satiricon78 I agree autistic people can and have added to the world through their unique thought process, as have schizophrenics, but that doesn't make the condition optimal. The claim/excuse that autism's rise is due to diagnostic substitution is never supported - once again, conducting ongoing studies could dis/prove the claim, but the establishment would rather parrot the line that is most convenient.

@usurynation I don't mean to be harsh, but this is dangerously incorrect. 1st, any decent epi study accounts for socio-economic variables. Secondly, even if a study didn't account, it would show up in the categories such as "death by accident" which is EQUAL for formula vs breast feeding - while causes like SIDS are 4x higher for formula. Since most deaths are congenital defects & premature birth, formula is actually far worse than 2x risk for illness related deaths.

my sister just had a baby & her doctor told her she didn't make enough milk to feed the baby and to give her formula. even doctors push this stuff. if a baby has enough fat, which most do in developed countries, is it better to let them go a little hungry? what is a viable options for mothers who can't breastfeed?

How do you know this, how do you know that autistic children weren't misdiagnosed back then, or even better called strange(parental neglect from not taking the child to a doctor). The TRUTH is we have the ability to diagnose people better now the back in those days, please do yourself a favor, and tell your wife you love her, and if you have children, to do the same.
