Last spring (2006), the MBA program here at UGA went to Cuba to study its economy. We had a nice time, but it didn't take long to determine that communism is a cruel joke. This is video of a farmer in Cuartel rolling a hand-made cigar the old-fashioned way.

Unfortunately, they wouldn't even let us take still pictures at the Robusto factory in Havana, so I have no video of the industrialized process.

  • fail camera, I blame you primarily

  • Yup! I was a poor graduate student and could only afford the cheapest digital camera on the shelf at Target. Totally my fault! I should have gone $18,000 into debt to buy the super-deluxe HD camera at Best Buy, along with a tripod to keep my shot steady. I'm such a dumbass! I shouldn't have let a trivial things as money and the fact that I had no idea what I'd see or if I'd even be allowed to bring a camera into Cuba to keep me from practicing perfect camera technique! Gawd, that was dumb!

  • where can i buy this in usa?

  • Your only bet these days is pre-embargo tobacco. Otherwise, it's technically illegal.

Don't worry, even though it's over 40 years old, it's still safe to smoke.

  • Not to knock your video, but this is an inferior method of rolling. This is called the "booking" method, used by unskilled rollers. Factories in Cuba use the "entubao" method, where leaves are individually bunched and rolled, not laid flat on the table overlapping each other as he does in this video Furthermore, no newsprint is ever used. If this was a factory, the conditions in which he would be rolling would be very, very different.

  • Yeah, we visited one of the factories while we were there. I know it's different. That said, this cigar was quite good!

By the way, they don't let you bring video or still cameras to the actual factories.

  • "where can i buy this in usa?"

You can't, because in the usa, you have no liberties or freedoms anymore.

Move to a more liberal country, like switzerland, finland, or canada. Then perhaps you can live a real life.
