I took this video last July when I chased the #6936 pulling the Portola Railroad Museum Special into the Feather River Canyon.

First clip is at Lower Honcut Rd., between Marysville and Oroville. The Centennial is slowing down due to a red light ahead. This gave me time to drive two crossings ahead to Central House Rd., where I took the second clip. The Centennial is accelerating after clearing the siding and the red light.

The Nathan M5 sounds more muted, since there's no canyon nearby to reverberate its wonderful sound.

  • P5

  • @bkayganich: It's a M5. See below - one of the staff at the WP museum commented on it. A Western Pacific railfan who has heard this M5 will never mistaken it for anything else. P5's sound a bit higher pitched and "brighter" while the M5 sounds mellower. There are websites that compare the sounds, if you want to verify. Look for my videos of the SP 6051 - that one has a P5.

  • Doesnt that M-5R24 belong to a museum employee? Because 6396 originally had an RS-3L

  • @cweis127: Yes, that's what I have been told, too.

  • How fast would you guess that train is going! My guess would be about 40 or 50 miles an hour

  • @styx4ever1963: Yeah, my guess would be about 40 mph also.
