My pug is also the son of a crufts champion and has had problems with fainting/collapsing and sometimes its hard to get him to start breathing.. Maybe pedigrees arent all that healthy afterall...

It is a damn shame..

Anyone who ever fell in love with a dog understands how these wonderful angels contribute to our lives. The fact that man uses them like a thing to make money with is sickening. I feel your pain... I understand how much it hurts seeing your K9 kid suffer just because breeders didn't care to breed for health first and foremost.

See, all of you people acknowledge the problem yet still think dogs like Pugs are viable.

All of the freak toy dogs are wrong. Unless you've got some decent structure. It ain't right. Its still the same distorted view of "beauty" over health. Just a teensy bit milder.

If most breed standards would put emphasis on the health first, the dogs may/may not be better off. If I had the resources, I'd run dog shows where the health/love of dog is top priority. AKC doesn't recognize silver Labs? Baloney. Just because a dogs doesn't adhere to a standard doesn't make it any less of an authentic member of a said breed. All breeds have changed over time when adapting to new environments.

This is why I rescue from shelters! You can bring home an animal 10 times healthier and 100 times less expensive, yet just as loving and loyal and intelligent as that purebred genetic disaster.

You would think that people who learn that the dog breed they are about to buy is genetically compromised would change the breed of dog to something healthier.
