Some more exceptional film material from Gerhard Skrobek and Hermann Luschner. The video shows partial destruction und evacuation of the Vestmannaeyjar island Heimaey. It also shows the rapid growth of Eldfell volcano during the first days of the eruption. Unfortunately the super8 material is in a bad condition, so that it was impossible to post the video in a higher quality. However I think that this documentary is worth watching!

  • With the recent eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano just across on the water in mainland Iceland, those who live on the Vestmann Islands must be watching anxiously that the magma plumes are not going to surface again.

  • @ShiveCanber Yeah, with volcanoes you never know - but another eruption on Heimaey in near future seems to be unlikely. However Iclandic volcanism is very powerful and eruptions like on Heimaey or the Eyjafjallajökull are small in comparison to eruptions occured at the Lakagigar or Eldgja fissure systems beneath Katla and Grimsvotn volcanoes.

  • Luckily, Chuck Norris was there, he pissed on the lava front and saved the town.

  • Thank you for posting this. I'm taking a geology class (partially due to my fascination with earthquakes and volcanoes) and we're doing research on various things that are a result of plate tectonics. One of them was this incident specifically. And being able to see the footage really helps. I was amazed in reading about it how calmly people were able to handle the eruption....

  • It was quite the video.... So sad for people in the area !

  • this is what you get when you have the mid atlantic ridge running right through your country.

  • Thank you for uploading this movie...

  • Fantastic to watch but I am glad that I am not there! I am praying for everyone who is.

  • I'm reading McPhee's book The Control of Nature and this was great to be able to see the real thing!
