This is an simple experiment in control theory. Using a micro controller, we can can manipulate an electromagnet into levitating a neodymium magnet. This project was done on our spare time using leftover parts from the Hopper project. The control of the electromagnet could be improved upon dramatically, but we simply wanted to see if we could make it work without investing a significant amount of time into it. Overall, we're pleased with how it turned out, and we hope that you enjoy the video.

Special thanks goes to Prof. Haller and the rest of the E.E. department of Lehigh University.

  • does this control the levitation???

  • @lalitpv07 Yes, the magnetic force imposed upon the screw-magnet combination is modulated by my control system in such a way as to make the object hover in mid air. No strings attached!

  • Yes, I meant to say "Faraday's Law (of Induction)" instead of the "Faraday Effect." Sorry for that confusion everyone!
