Events in the Taiwan strait unfolded because China has better leadership then America. Cho En Lai may have been the finest political strategist the world has known. As a Chinese he took the long view. He knew, in time Taiwan would revert to Chinese control.

When asked by Henry Kissinger what he thought about the French revolution, Cho En Lai said: "It's to early to tell."

America was protecting it's corrupt petty tyrant - Chang Kai Chek. In fact, China has never had any external ambitions in it's 5000 year history according to Harvard Professor John K. Fairbank testifying before the American Senate's Foreign Relations Committee in February 1966. Kennan was wrong about China's external ambitions (the Domino Theory).

Taiwan has always been part of China.

This threat was supposed to be viewed as very credible, as to deter china. Would US have actually bombed them? i don't think so, cuz china and russia has sino-soviet treaty, which would have sparked a world war3, since it binded them to come to eatchother's aid if attacked by an outside power. Nevertheless, it worked, allowing for a 'cold peace' to take place between china and taiwan. I wouldn't have wanted it any other way to be honest. ^_~b

At the time, Tawain was the UN's legitimate seat of China's gov't. The taiwan strait was where the line of containment had been drawn for the PRC. The strategy of containment is firm, cautious and attentive to threats and relative power. it rests on kennan's logic that the internal changes needed to makes china less of a threat and more democratic are more likely to occur if the country's external ambitions are contained and the system is thus forced to fall on its own contradictions.

I am simply in favour of using the Rational Actor Model to link the purpose and action of a given administration. Using this scientific process, i am able to fully explain the actions in terms of the goals. the history of contemporary foreign policy is simply the best strategy option in terms of military objectives at the given time. I am voting for the Green Party, I am Canadain, and I study these issues at university. I am what your 'typical american' should wish to aspire to!
