The Better Beer Authority reviews Iron City Beer out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Partial Transcript: "On Tap Iron City Beer

Welcome to the Better Beer Authority. Im James Knott. Today we will be talking about Iron City Beer which has been made by the Iron City Brewing Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania since 1861.

Loved by people from Pittsburgh, hated by most beer connoisseurs, this beer is probably most notable for its strong regional ties to Western Pennsylvania. This is an American-style lager with 4.5 % alcohol by volume and 140 calories per 12-ounce bottle.

American Style Lagers also called American Adjunct Lagers became popular in the US during prohibition when many brewers were forced out of business. They are characterized by a pale straw-like color - light flavor with no bitterness - and the use of rice or corn as adjunct ingredients that cut down on the cost of brewing. The most famous example of this type of beer is Budweiser.

  • hey this is a great show, you could turn it into a game show to get home brewers to compete against the panels taste

  • @SuperCroweater We did do a gameshow style portion in our Chimay Blind Taste Test and our Bud Light Vs. Miller Lite Vs. Coors Light video.

  • This is great, I didn't realize this beer was still brewed. This beer is old-school but happy to see it is atill around. Cheers!

  • @davidrcoulter This beer is still huge in Pittsburgh.

  • I just heard Opie & Anthony and they mentioned this beer. I am also a 12 pack in on a Heineken so I decided to check it out on youtube. It sounds like it is a everyday beer like Labatt Blue Beer.

  • @LeathermanFan2 Nothing special about it. Very similar to the big national brands. If you're looking to have a few while your watching the game, then this might be a good choice.

Yeah Iron City is an adjunct lager and is pretty horrible, HOWEVER, next time you're in Pittsburgh and you DO you want to try a pretty good local craft beer, I recommend something from Penn Brewery. Penn Pilsner, for sake of example. Or with Christmas coming up, maybe Penn's St. Niklaus Bock around the time of the holidays.

  • @AgileHProductions Thanks, it looks like a everyday beer where you don't expect anything flavorful to happen, but it gets you through the day or week like Labatt Blue Beer.
