This is the third in a brief new series. Jesse Woodson James was born in Missouri in 1847, which made him just the right age for the outbreak of the Civil War in 1862. He and his brother Frank became Confederate guerillas and engaged in some brutal activities during the war. And he never quite got over this earlier taste for violence. After the war, Jesse and his brother became criminal innovators, trying some new illegal (but highly profitable) ventures like robbing banks and holding up trains. They kept it up for 17 years, launching criminal forays that reached from Missouri to Minnesota, Kansas, Iowa, West Virginia, and Texas. Between raids, they lived quietly with their families under assumed names, largely protected by neighbors who considered them folk heroes. Jesse was finally shot in the back by "that dirty little coward" Bob Ford while dusting a photograph in his own parlor in St, Joseph, Missouri. He was 34 years old. Ford and his brother Charlie accepted a small reward from the governor and fled Missouri. Jesse's brother Frank, in Virginia when Jesse died, surrendered to authorities in Missouri five months later, and stood trial for a couple of killings and the robbery of an Army payroll, but he was acquitted in all three trials. The fact that a war hero Missouri general named Joseph Orville Shelby testified on his behalf and even embraced him in front of the jury may have helped. Frank was 72 when he died on the James farm. Music includes "Jesse James," sung by Jimmy Driftwood, and "The Legend of Jesse James,"performed by Charlie Daniels.
I wish I was alive back then....
