my car is doing the same exact thing.

They most certainly are a noisy engine, but that sound is a rod. Unfortunately I had to get rid of her

i have the same motor and it makes a similar noise, but not that bad... all iron dukes are noisey.

Man you ever hear those sounds that make a grown man cringe? That's one of them. Ouch.

is it worth tearing the bottom end out of it?

those engines are easy to get, I see them on many cars at LKQ and be had for a few bucks, The block on those engines are very easy to break, Im suprised the rod did not knock a whole in the thing, They also have nylon timing gears that go out easy

They are few and far between around here and anything before 1986 won't work because in 1987 they changed to Electronic Ignition where the 86 and prior had a Dizzy and there are some other differences too... Any of the local Junk Yards would have crushed any cars with those engines in them long ago. And the rod didn't break, it was on it's way out. I've heard about the nylon gears being weak, but I never had a problem with them.

and your right about the timing gears....the only possible problem is that the cam gear ( phenolic plastic) might have worn down along the way and threw it out of time....possibly bending a valve or something of that nature...

It's not really worth it for me to tear the bottom end apart. This is motor #2 for this car. They're tough and all but at higher speeds they tend to wear out quick. And I'm always traveling at 120km/h. And I've been told that the car probably won't pass inspection this time around. Which is a shame because the body is in great shape, but the frame has been mended, and still could use some work. Time for a different vehicle. for $500 she's been a great car!

either that, or you broke a valve spring, pop your valve cover and take a look...

All the valve springs are fine, at least as fine as I can remember. I had the valve cover off the day after I noticed it but don't remember seeing anything broken... This was the beginning of January
