Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Missouri. Delayed treatment increases a patients risk for death and disability. The national standard for hospitals is to have a door-to-balloon time (symptom onset to delivery of care) of 90 minute or less, including transport time. Dr. George Kichura, cardiologist with St. Johns Mercy Heart and Vascular Hospital and part of a statewide task force on time critical diagnosis, is helping write regulations within Missouri State Law that will save the lives and hearts of Missourians having heart attacks.
