I rescued /reared & released a baby robin a few weeks ago, it seems they do sunbath as our robin would actively seek-out the hotspot & spread out his/her wings & tail to get maximun rays. you can see it on youtube 'Twidders 2 ' very cute & amusing. checkout the other Twidders vids to see how well he has progressed, now free but pops in everyday for food although he is able to catch his own food.

those birds are not sun bathing, they are cooling off. they do this to expose the bare underbelly to cool surfaces when its hot.
