SAC and NORAD had apx. 20 minuts before ICBM's came over the north pole, 7 minuts for soviet SLBM's. The President had 10 to make the decision to launch or not. Launch took about 2 minuts. B-52's were on the "alert pad" (it looks like a christmas tree of roads for easy takeoff procedures.) BUFF's were in the air in 2:00. How do I know this? My father was aircraft mantinace, then assigned to SAC for the last few years it existed. They Drilled ALL THE TIME. THEY WERE DAMN GOOD, AND STILL ARE...

My Father Navigated the BUFF and KC-135's - SAC Young Tiger Taskforce Vietnam (after MAD patyrol duty).

My grandfather worked for them as B-52 pilot During Vietnam

My Dad was part of SAC for 23 years and flew for 17 years in it. I was so proud of him for his military career. Protecting the US skies from Russia.

As a former B-52 Crew Chief and an old Cold War Warrior, I found this video to be a step back in time

Great to see a collection about SAC and the old days of "we never sleep, so you can"... wasn't there an ad on TV for that?

golfshopbob-thanks for post. At the risk of sounding ignorant, what does BUFF stand for? Also is there any book that you would recommend to give the reader a true sense of the demands of excellence and urgency associated with SAC with some technical details?

As a retired MSgt, I was with SAC my entire 25 year duty from 1962 to 1988. I was with 494thBW, then with ORI Team, lst Combat Eval Group, based out of Offutt AFB HQ SAC. This video is the best I have ever seen and depicts the extreme pressure all BUFF Crews, both Air and Ground....long may the USAF live and BUFF fly its ever present guard.

My Grandfather helped design the SAC patch I don't know what part of it but I can't ask him now because he's been dead for 15 years and I'm 14 so it doesn't work that way his name was Robert Elledge.

poor guys left on the ground... about to be toast..
It's amazing how much larger the old command center is, then the new one is. Technology has really come along way, to allow the new command center to be the size of a typical movie theater. I'm just glad I had the opportunity to visit it. Since 9/11 no public tours.
