Jamyang Kyi preforming Phayul Dren Lu during a Losar, Tibetan new year celebration in Amdo. Born in 1965 in eastern Tibet, Jamyang Kyi is well-known among Tibetans as an activist on women's issues and is a leading writer, television producer, and performer.
She was arrested in April 2008 for sending txt messages to friends about the protests and crackdown which took place across Tibet in 2008. She was tortured during her time in prison and bravely gave testimony about her horrific experiences after she was released in May 2008.
Jamyang's music is influenced by modern folk music and traditional Tibetan music. Her passionate words continue to inspire Tibetans inside and outside Tibet.
