The first mainline run for Ian Riley's second Black Five no.44871 saw her paired with 45407 for an excursion from Manchester to Carlisle, outward via Shap and returning over the Settle & Carlisle. The day was also notable for being probably the last footplate turn for the legendary
Frank Santrian who is due to retire and as 44871 was once based at his home shed of Stoke an especially memorable day for him.
In a difficult day for filming, with very strong winds, the train is first seen at Lostock (with a few sound problems) and then Greenholme. The final shot was taken at Kirkby Stephen with a very strong crosswind playing havoc with the sound and although the camera was on a tripod this shot is still a little wobbly.

  • Very atmospheric excellent

  • Thanks, your comment has reminded me of that bitterly cold day...brrrr

  • Faultless as always Austin, you have to be there to fully appreciate how difficult it is to film in such inclement weather....excellent production from the Master...5* Bob

  • Thanks Bob, not really faultless though, the last shot should really have been left on the cutting room floor. It was a dreadful day.

  • Nice one and I didn't notice anything wrong at all! Just glad I wasn't there shivering with cold, but can thankfully watch your beautiful videos, instead!

  • Thanks, I don't think it's one of my best efforts but another record of the day to go with other folks vids.

  • I'm sure you have done better before, but not in that weather! Very well indeed to have made it, and recorded it - the record speaks for itself.

  • Haha, I've tried since I've got back and it does seem to work as normal, but i've just bought a new car today so hopefully i'm going to try pop along to the worth valley at the weekend and give it a little try. If this dam snow clears... Erghh haha.

  • Cheers Si, yes, your day from hell!! Have you got a new camera yet or has the old one recovered.

  • Great stuff Austin in what can only be described as awful conditions as we both know haha...

Loved the shot at Greenholme, kind of wished i'd attempted either there or Scout Green instead of Shap Wells, never mind... Next time :|
