The trick is to match the voltage. The two car batteries must have been fully charged as they were around 26 volts combined. Then they just dump their voltage into the A123s. The long zip wire cuts down the Amps for the transfer to a reasonable 16 amps. I know the small 1100ma A123s can take only about 7amps. A 4 cell A123 pack maxes out at 14.6 volts so it wouldn't quite get charged by one car battery. A 3 cell A123 pack could get overcharged by an auto battery.

You can charge the 2300mah cell up too 4.2volts per, so a 3 cell A123 2300 pack can be charge at 12.6 volts. So yes, you can charge a 3-cell on one auto lead acid battery. Again limiting the current flow by using a zip chord with the length of it cut so the current is max out to 10 amps per "P". We've done a 3 cell A123 pack zip chord directly to a car battery before, so it works.
The 1100mah, I usually charge them at 5 amps.
