@f1junkster, Thursday night MX at OCIR was the bomb! I did scoring and David worked the start gate. Wasn't that the best time? After OCIR closed, I went to work for Supercross. Those were fun days too. Having lunch with John Bradley and Larry Huffman tomorrow!

Hi everyone, thought I'd jump in here and say hi. It's Barbara and David from OCIR in the good old days. I worked in the souvenir stand and then the office with Lynn and Bill, then Lynn and Charlie. David worked in the bleach box with Bill 'the thrill drill' Schilling. What great times we had with Tow Truck Chuck, Larry Sutton and the rest of the OCIR gang. ddguild1, thanks for the memories!

@JHotnuts It's been said that ... "history has a way of repeating itself", and sometimes when you least expect it.
The same thing happened 11 months later, at the same track, in the same lane, and just about the same time of day! A car got crossed up while in reverse after the burnout, and ended up on it's side during Saturday Qualifying @ the '81 World Finals.
The Victim? Connie Kalitta!!

OCIR was my 1st job at 15 years old back in 73. I worked in the concession stand for 4 years and was a huge racing fan. I miss that place.

Boy do I remember and miss that place. My old Wednesday, Friday & Saturday hangout (and Thursday for motocross)!

You can see just after he puts it in reverse he burps the throttle, the front wheels violently jump to one side and the car whips to one side. This was caused because of the amount of caster in the front steering, and once the car had a little too much power applied in reverse caused weight to transfer to the fronts and snapped the steering wheel out of his hand. True that high caster angles will make your car track forward will be equally bad in reverse.

If I recall, this was a test or license run. I don't think the throttle stuck until after the car was on it's side on the guard rail. The rest looked to me like a combination of human error and disorientation.
