  • However someone must be making a lot of money out of this activity as it cost us 25 euro to ride down in the basket then you are obliged to give a tip as the guys hold out their hats for money, and then to get down the rest of they way into Funchal the taxies charge 18 euro!! This is a grossly overinflated price as it it only about a mile down the road. It seems to me the tourist are also gettting exploited!!

  • Thanks emmj your comment about exploitation is interesting I had not looked at it that way before!

  • it's a tourist trap, of course anybody must decide if the money is worth it. You don't have to take a taxi , there is a cheap bus too. I think there are much nicer things to do in Madeira, but I've done it for my kids.

It may be these guys have a sad life but it's not the tourists fault . They are not very friendly and it's expensive , they want to force a tip from you, then the taxi drivers at the end are very pushing. The ride is quite nice but the whole experience is not very pleasant.

  • EMMJ:

    You are one BIG donK!

    Shame on you!

"It is only possible here in Madeira because of the highest rate of functional illiteracy in Europe (60%!!!)"

    You Now what you said?????

IGNORANT are YOU about the Madeira reality!

More than 60% English are racist! It´s the same JOKE!!!!!!!

  • It's fun! For those who DON'T have to live in the neighbourhood... I have to put up with this anachronism display on daily basis. I cannot imagine anywhere else in Europe, in the XXI century, civilised citizens rendering themselves such examples of human exploitation! It is only possible here in Madeira because of the highest rate of functional illiteracy in Europe (60%!!!) These men cannot perform any other professional activity for they hardly have their fourth year of basic school training.

  • This is logistically possible, and desirable, by decision-makers who know this people would become a social nuisance, were they not able to pull the sledges down the road, dangerously competing for space amidst the vehicles, compromising their knees after this continuous shock and stress down the road. It is such a poor display to see these guys in the end of the day drinking their lives away for they don't have any further horizons.

  • Los de adelante dicen: hay esta otro
