Did the phones have the exact same apps installed on them (Other than the hardware-specific apps)? Because startup time depends on the amount of apps installed on the phone? I only mention this because it appears as though you had more apps installed on the 3G vs the original making it appear slower. Just wondering...

3G and 3GS are exactly the same, but first generation has some applications missing. Some bookmarks onthe home screen, couple of applications like twitter, last fm, midomi, shazam are missing from first generation. That's because the AT&T line I'm using on that phone doesn't have internet connection package. I try to avoid accidentally loging on the internet as much as I can. :)
