DISCLAIMER: I do not use the damage glitch, and this is NOT a tool-assisted speedrun. This is an unassisted speedrun that uses simply human skill and reflex. I know what others have achieved out there (including the record), but this is my personal best, i.e. on November 22, 2011, I beat Castlevania in personal record time: 14 min, 57 sec (that's from the first time one has control over the character to the last time one has control over the character).

This, of course, is the original Castlevania, i.e. Castlevania I/Akumajo Dracula (1987/1986) for 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), which is a Retro Gaming Classic and my favorite game ever for its music, story, playability, etc. To the uninformed, the first tip for a speed run is to not die. Dying is such a waste of time. The second is to ignore most candles and hidden items. And obviously, no cheating.

So, there were definitely spots where time was wasted. I should have jumped on bones in levels 3 and 5 and 6 to bypass staircases whenever possible, but I was just trying to conserve energy and play it safe late in the game. Also, I took longer to beat the bosses than I could have, especially Dracula. Obviously, holy water is the best weapon for all bosses and the fastest way to beat the game.

I've pushed this game to its limits, e.g. I've beaten Castlevania 5x in a row and up to stage 99 at which point the stage number stops incrementing, even though I was clearly entering stages 100, 101, and beyond. One bummer is that once you hit 1,000,000 points, the score resets and you can't get any more extra lives. (The top left of screen should read SCORE/PLAYER/ENEMY but it was cropped.)

  • @spiritmastermusic Thanks for liking/commenting! And AMEN about Castlevania being one of the greatest video games in history. You should revisit it online, there's quite a few vNES versions out there. Beware of addiction though...

  • Nice job! I remember beating this game for the first time as a kid after many many many very frustrating hours of gameplay! Then I mastered it, much like you have. Will forever be one of the greatest gaming experiences in history.
