Michael Thiele, maker of "Hardwood Music" tongue drums, visited House of Musical Traditions in Takoma Park, MD on December 9 2010. In this video, Michael demonstrates a jumbo 12-key drum and a 14-key drum. The video concludes with some good-natured ribbing of HMT owner David Eisner (he and Michael have been friends for years). On the right is longtime HMT employee Stream Ohrstrom, who is also a maker, repairer and teacher of drums and folk flutes.
HMT has been selling Hardwood drums for over 30 years. Michael Thiele and his son Joah Thiele make these instruments (also called slit drums or log drums) by hand in their shop in Flagstaff, AZ. They use beautiful hand-selected domestic and exotic (non-endangered) hardwoods, and tune each model precisely to a specific scale. These drums are used extensively throughout the recording industry by major performing artists (including Ben Harper). They are widely recognized as the "Strad" of tongue drums. Anything less is just a box!
