If God is good and all-powerful, then the existence of evil infringes upon either is goodness or omnipotence. Theodicy as divine pedagogy has many problems because it would lead to ethical quietism. I like Mark's conclusion in answering the practical application of suffering. However, he doesn't fully answer why we suffer, or rather he avoids it.

Amen to that!! God loves us. He doesn´t punish us because he punished his Holy Son in the Cross...
