Australian soldiers serving in East Timor have had the honour of being invited to one of the nation's most significant celebrations, Falintil Day.

The annual commemoration of the formation of East Timor's military force was attended by President Dr. Jose Ramos-Horta, Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, political and military dignitaries and hundreds of locals at the Government Palace in Dili.

Falintil, a Portuguese acronym for Forcas Armadas de Libertacao Nacional de Timor-Leste, translates to "The Armed Forces for the National Liberation of East Timor," which was the original military wing of the nation's political party, established on 20 August 1975.
