The Gravy Train is back in town

MPs raise a glass of bubbly as parliament returns to session

After visits to expense offenders Tony McNulty and Hazel Blears, and pit stops at both Labour and Conservative Conferences, the Vote for a Change campaign pulled into Westminster on Monday.

The campaign has warned MPs that they can't expect a return to 'business as usual', and need to move on calls for a referendum on the voting system in this parliament.

Willie Sullivan from the Vote for a Change campaign said:

"Our MPs return from recess to a totally unreconstructed parliament.
Everything the expenses crisis revealed was broken, remains broken. Our MPs remain unaccountable, our parliament remains unrepresentative. All that's changed is the number of days left until another general election held under our antique voting system throws up another second rate parliament incapable of holding the government, or itself, to account.

"The solutions we've heard from Brighton and Manchester show both leading parties are still incapable of taking the necessary steps to fix our politics.

"The Gravy Train is back in town, but so are the calls for change. Its passengers should be under no illusions that voters have forgotten about duck ponds and cheque-book contrition. There can be no business as usual.
Voters expect change - real change - and that demands action on the system that doles out jobs for life, all expenses paid, in hundreds of safe seats.

"Supporters of all parties would welcome a choice on whether we keep the broken politics of First-Past-the-Post. Voters are simply waiting for a politician with the courage to deliver."
