January 22, 2009: These jays (A Steller's Jay and a Scrub-Jay) waste no time eating. The platform feeder today has raw, unsalted, unshelled peanuts. They seemed to be taking turns, with only one minor scuffle about 3/4 through the video. Toward the end, they became more discriminating, selecting and rejecting several nuts before they fly away with their prize.

I never tire of watching Scrub-jays (Aphelocoma californica, Order PASSERIFORMES - Family CORVIDAE) and Steller's Jays (Cyanocitta stelleri, Order PASSERIFORMES - Family CORVIDAE).

  • The scuffle in the rhododendron tree took place right after I added some more peanuts to the bird feeder. These look like Styrofoam peanuts! But they are the real thing: raw, unsalted, in the shell.

  • The Steller's Jay takes these nuts away and hides them, perhaps in a flower pot. In the next to the last clip, you can see him stuff his beak before he flies away.

Poor squirrels! This is THEIR feeder... the birds have a separate platform feeder, a few yards away, which has a variety of nuts and seeds.
