Lost Calories: US trashes $ 1 Bln worth of food

America's expanding waistline prove's the country's love affair with food. But almost as much as is consumed, is being dumped in the trash every day. And that's despite statistics saying millions in the country are now struggling to put anything on the dinner plate. Marina Portnaya met the so called dumpster divers who say a few minutes of raking through garbage bags can deliver a banquet.

@goombafreak eh, food is food, and very valuable to poorer countries.there is very little wasted food there. you can always wash your fruit off or cut off any bruises if it had any, no reason to throw it in the trash, unless it was actually smothered in feices, but i think that is quite rare

id worry the reason it was tossed was something other than the obvious, they could have seen a bum wipe poop on it out of his pants etc, there are many reasons for tossing food , waste isnt the only reason
